This coming summer AVID Center is excited to introduce Blended Learning into some of our Summer Institute strands. Blended Learning is a combination of face-to-face professional development with portions of online learning. For more information see the Blended Learning FAQ document. Here are a few highlights:
Will staff developers have access to both pre‐work and boosts before SI?
Yes. It will be critical for staff developers to be familiar with their appropriate boosts that address their strand.
Will there be opportunities for all staff developers to collaborate on the development of the 3‐Day strand material? I really desire to have the 3‐Days be as interactive and participatory as possible.
We want to keep our current model, which includes assigning lead staff developers to create and modify syllabi. Lead staff developers will still engage with others for input. The only essential changes will be to strive towards consistency and greater efficiency of time with participants, though shorter, face-to‐face training will play an even more prominent role.
When will the other staff developers get a chance to practice/see some of these interactive materials?
Staff developers working at San Diego 1 and 2 Summer Institutes will have an opportunity in 2011. All staff developers will have the opportunity in 2012.
How will blended learning address the deficiencies that many site teams have when arriving at SI?
When they become available, SI participants should participate in pre‐SI blended learning modules designed for site teams. Those not utilizing the modules prior to arriving will be given the website to access on their own time.
Non‐AVID schools will definitely want to jump on the blended learning bandwagon. How will we address this situation? Will this be another avenue through which we can “market” AVID?
Non‐AVID schools will not have access to blended learning modules.
What if someone is not registered for one of this summer’s three strands that are using blended learning, can they still go online and look at these modules? Could they be used by a whole campus to give an overview of AVID?
Unless you are registered for one of the strands, you will not have access to the modules. At this time, it is not our intent for the modules to be used for large group viewing.
With the “boost” follow‐ups, will there be a follow‐up WebEx or interaction with blended learning participants? Will the follow‐up be within 24 hours? Will it be whole group or individual?
The development of a boost follow‐up WebEx or forum is undecided. We do not know if the staff or funds are available to support such endeavors at this time.
